Web8 mrt. 2024 · I see no reason why dialogue should not be treated the same as any other paragraph, with usual indent. Be sure that there is no added inter-paragraph skip. But then I only use LuaLaTeX. And, shameless plug for a new document class, specific to writing novels. Its package name is "novel" of course. – Web20 aug. 2024 · It's conventional to indent all narrative and dialogue unless either is the first line in a new section or chapter. So in the case you've given, Tara, the Joe and Mama sentence should be indented. Pick up any mainstream published novel and you'll see that my suggested layout is standard.
